reliable absinthe recipies

topic posted Sat, September 25, 2004 - 7:01 PM by  Christopher
hello Abstininthe people! I was a "regular" at this years burning-man, and very much enjoyed your conversation and absinthe. Now I would like more of both! Have browsed the web a couple of times, coming up with more contrasting info about absinithe than I ever wanted to know. I would like to make my own. I know very little about distilling or the other method you mentioned (I can't even remember the word!). What is the best resource that you've found? Should i be consulting a second source, like a book preferably, to learn about distillation? Most of the info I found on that was mostly pertaining to wine, beer, whisky, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if you are ever in Seattle drop me a line.

In case you don't remember, I helped take down your wires, and drove off in a yellow Hummer, for christ's sake.
Thank you again!
Christopher

Hey Christopher- good to hear from you. The word you are trying to remeber is "infusion". It is much easier than distilling but purists will say that it isn't "true" absinthe. whatever, if it tastes good and has the same effects- alcohol
    + thujone- who cares?
You might want to try www.erowid.org Erowid has a lot of good info, but I'm afraid a lot of what we have done is trial and error. One piece of advice I would give- Don't leave the wormwood in too long. A lot of people think that more time gives more effect. It does yield slightly more thujone but it greatly increases the bitterness and the other impurities that give you a bad hangover.
    Hope you have fun!

Hey folks... first post here... I just experimented with a batch of infusion style and it worked fairly good... I used the liquid concentrate though and am going to experiment with the dried and crushed wormwood here in a few days. After I get back from a 1-4 day Amsterdam absinthe gathering expedition. :-) wheeee.
Anyone been to Absinthe Night Bar over there? I'll let you know how it is....

Christopher, I come to Seattle regularly how come I think we might know each other?

Try Pharmako/Poeia by Dale Pendell. Our Absinthe gang likes his recipe the best, and we have had several tasting competitions between a number of folks that make it. Plus it's a really interesting read. Shouldn't be too difficult for you to rig up your own still, and it really does make a difference. Let us know how it goes!
